Decision intelligence: what it is and why AI is changing it
There's a fundamental difference between having data and making better decisions. Data tells you what happened. Decision intelligence helps you understand what to do with what you know — and especially what to do with what you don't know.
What is decision intelligence
Decision Intelligence is a relatively new discipline that sits at the intersection of three fields: data science, cognitive science, and strategic management. It's not business intelligence — that shows you dashboards and reports. It's not analytics — that finds patterns in historical data.
Decision intelligence deals with how decisions are actually made, what factors influence them, and how you can systematically improve the quality of decision-making for an individual or an organization.
AI's role: amplifier, not substitute
The most common mistake when discussing AI and decisions is thinking that artificial intelligence can decide for us. It can't, and it shouldn't. AI is extraordinary at processing large amounts of information, identifying patterns invisible to the human eye, and simulating multiple scenarios in very short timeframes.
But a decision isn't just processed information. It's also context, values, relationships, long-term consequences that no algorithm can weigh like the person living that situation. AI is an amplifier of decision intelligence, not a substitute for it.
Where DAMM fits in
The DAMM framework represents an approach to decision intelligence that integrates quantitative analysis with qualitative protection. The Health Score generated by DAMM's AI engine doesn't tell you "do this" — it tells you "this decision has these specific vulnerabilities."
Delimitation forces clarity on what's truly at stake. Asymmetry quantifies the ratio between risk and opportunity. Margin verifies whether you have room to absorb error. Minimum Move identifies the smallest step to validate the hypothesis before fully committing.
The future of the discipline
Decision intelligence is destined to become a fundamental competency, on par with the ability to read a balance sheet or manage a project. Organizations that adopt it first will have a structural competitive advantage: not because they'll always make the right decision, but because they'll systematically reduce the cost of wrong decisions.
AI will accelerate this process, but the core will remain human: understanding what truly matters before choosing.
