His books move across non-fiction — where he explores the mechanisms behind choices, reputations, and the quiet transformations of modern work — and fiction, where those same mechanisms return in the shape of characters, of fathers and sons, of lives that crack and try to put themselves back together. He believes a good book should not convince, but leave the reader with one more question than the one they came in with. He lives by Lake Como, where his two-year-old son reminds him every day that the most important stories are not written: they are lived first.
